LASER FUNGAL NAIL ERADICATION
Fungal nail infections (onychomycosis) are very common, affecting up to 1 in every 10 of the UK population. Toenail and fingernail fungus is an infection underneath the surface of the nail caused by fungi. When the tiny organisms take hold, the nail often becomes darker in colour and can smell foul. Debris may collect beneath the nail plate, and white marks frequently appear on the nail. The infection can spread to other nails, the skin, or even the nails on other limbs.
WHY USE A LASER?
Medicine has benefited significantly from the use of lasers. Specifically, within dermatology, advances in laser technology have allowed the development of lasers to target fungal cells. Over the past 10 years the advances have been significant using heat delivered from the laser and its infra-red 1064nm beam.
Fungus is contained within the nail complex and the lasers can target these fungal cells directly without the risks involved when oral medication is taken, or the long period of time required when applying topical medicines that can’t penetrate to the nail bed.
With our MHRA medical licensed machine, we can now treat the infection at a medical depth that is more than a cosmetic level, meaning this can be eradicated.
Clinical studies have shown that laser has a huge increase in positive eradications.
Treatment will require an initial free consultation and patch test, followed by usually 2-3 treatments on the affected nails, 4-6 weeks apart. Results will show depending on how quickly your nails grow, as your nail gradually grows out, the fungus will grow out with it -this may take 6-12 months for the nail to grow fully out and the fungus removed with it.
Following your third treatment should you require another treatment for a persistent/stubborn infection it will be discounted by 50%, as long as 6 weeks have not passed since your last treatment.
All toes/ fingers on one foot/hand will be treated, even if the infection is only on one nail, this is because the fungal spores will likely be present and develop on all nails.
The fungal nail must be diagnosed by your GP first, without this in writing, treatment cannot go ahead. Bring a copy of this letter with you or email it to us direct before your appointment.
HOW TO PREPARE?
It is vital to prevent re-infection that all shoes you wear without socks are treated with anti-fungal powder before your treatment.
You will need to bring a pair of clean socks with you to wear after your appointment.
Please ensure you cut your nails very short before your appointment.
There is no guarantee that this treatment will be successful, as fungal infections can be stubborn and difficult to remove, your homecare is vital, and you will be given advice during your consultation about the importance of homecare to help make this treatment a success and prevent reinfection during the treatment period.
